CAIRO - The old adage "Don't bite the hand that feeds you" should be extended to include "Don't cut off the ear the man who signs your paycheck." According to police officials, Ihab Fiqi was fired and jailed after getting in an argument with his boss, Mohamed Hassan, and stabbing him in the ear. Fiqi, an Egyptian officer, apparently disagreed with Hassan's accusation that he was tardy, so he lunged at him with a penknife. Fiqi was sacked and sentenced to 15 days detention.
INDIA - Here's a shuddering thought. An Indian doctor has removed a four-inch leech that had been inside a schoolboy's nostril for three days. The 10-year-old boy, Akhil, thinks the leech may have climbed up his nose while he was drinking water from a tap. He said it made him feel dizzy and made his nose bleed. According to Dr. Sukhdev Singh, of the Chandigarh General Hospital, it was the first time he had seen a leech up a patient's nostril during his 15-year career. When Akhil
splashed water on his face, the leech appeared and Singh pulled it out with a pair of forceps.
FRANKFURT, Germany - Customs agents announced Friday a huge capture of illegal passengers at Frankfurt's airport: 1,300 Mexican spiders hidden in the luggage of a French woman. The woman, who was not identified, was arrested September 3 on suspicion of smuggling a protected species, customs officials said. The estimated value of the hairy Mexican bird spiders was $14,000. Agents became suspicious because the woman had an unusually large amount of luggage for the short trip she had been on. The manner in which the luggage was packed also indicated professional smuggling, a customs statement said. [My question: What do you do with $14,000 worth of spiders, and who's paying for these things?]
OREGON - An airman who allegedly deserted Ellsworth Air Force Base where he was stationed, survived in his car for 16 days under four feet of snow. Thomas Truett, 29, left his post in South Dakota on December 3rd and drove West, through North California, until his 1982 Mazda sports car became stuck in the wilderness of Oregon. He attempted to walk out of the woods, but weather conditions were too severe. He survived in his automobile for 16 days with only a bottle of orange juice and a package of M&Ms. When he was finally found Truett had lost more than 20 pounds. Upon release from the hospital he is to be turned over to the Air Force where he will face federal desertion charges.
AUSTRALIA - Women's shopping impulses are starting to make some scents. Australian researchers claim the scent of a sexy man can send a woman on a shopping spree. Scientists have discovered male pheromones can send subliminal messages which influence a woman's spending habits. Research suggests that the sales staff in department stores may be able to tempt female shoppers into buying products by wearing perfume spiked with male pheromones. Iain Waller, who presented the paper, stated that the use of pheromones to try to influence customers' behavior could have legal and ethical implications.
